Singapore had launched Indian migrant worker pilot program

The construction, marine and process (CMP) sectors have started bringing in migrant workers from India under a pilot programme to ease the labour crunch. From the end of July workers from India will be brought in via the pilot programme which was trialled with workers from Malaysia last month, said a statement. The programme aims to “integrate the overseas training, testing and on-boarding process with Singapore’s on-arrival testing and stay-home notice (SHN) protocol to ensure the overall well-being of the workers before they are allowed to commence work”.


Besides quarantine costs in Singapore, employers under the new process have to pay about S$2,000 ($1,500) to S$3,000 ($2,000) per worker, according to Channel News Asia.


Mayumi Soh of Pinsent Masons MPillay, the Singapore joint law venture between MPillay and Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law, said: “It is hoped that this move will start to ease the pressure on local companies which are facing issues with manpower shortage.”


In May, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) stopped accepting new entry applications for work pass holders from higher risk countries or regions due to Covid-19, except for workers needed in key strategic projects and infrastructural works. MOM to allow up to 500 migrant workers to move within the community each week. VACCINATED migrant workers will be allowed to move within the community as part of a pilot starting Sept 13, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Thursday.
